SAE students film Push Over Festival 08

This year SAE Institute Melbourne sent 10 film students to film Push Over 2008. Push Over is a non profit, all ages music festival and this years line up was as big as ever. Featuring some of Australia's top acts such as, Shihad, Gyroscope, Cog, Young & Restless and The Getaway Plan just to name a few the day was a complete success. Capturing the performances on high definition Sony Z1P cameras, the shoot taught students how to film in the constraints of live sound. The students not only had to deal with a variety of different acts, but also had to work with the audio crew to receive sound from the mixing console. All in all it was a job well done and was a success thanks to the SAE Melbourne Film Department.

SAE MELBOURNE’S BIGGEST OPEN DAY IN THREE YEARS!

Firstly, for those of you who attended the SAE Institute Melbourne Open Day on Saturday 4 August, please accept a warm thank you.  The day was a huge success.  The new-look Open Day, complete with a continuous live band recording, student filming demonstrations and informative industry seminars, afforded attendees a rare glimpse at the behind the scenes workings of the audio and film industries.  All events were immensely popular, but non-more so than the BBQ in the car park!  The rain held out all day and over 500 sausages were consumed by happy punters and their families.  As a result of the day’s success, only a few places are left for the Melbourne campus’ September intake.  Interested parties are advised to apply sooner rather than later to avoid missing out on the last intake for 2007.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS STUDY AT SAE INSTITUTE FOR A DAY

Saturday 11 August saw 30 prospective students participate in a new SAE Institute initiative Study For A Day. Utilising the forthcoming single ‘Truth In Your Eyes’ from up-and-coming Melbourne band Burn The City, participants had the rare opportunity to experience the behind-the-scenes workings involved in creating a professional music video clip, from either an audio or film making perspective.  The day went off without a hitch.  The 30 budding digital film makers and audio engineers had a great time, with the audio stream recording and mixing the band in the main studio at SAE Melbourne, and the film stream learning storyboarding and scripting before heading down to film the band in SAE Melbourne’s full-sized green-screen room.  The interactivity of the day was great, with the 30 lucky attendees participating in all stages of making a professional music video clip.

SAE Melbourne’s next Study For A Day is Saturday 17 November.  Due to the success of the first Study For A Day, places won’t last long.  So, interested parties are encouraged to contact the campus on 03 9681 8422 or infomelbourne@sae.edu at their earliest convenience to secure a place.

SAE INSTITUTE PARTNERS WITH FLICKERFEST 2008

SAE & FLICKERFEST LAUNCH NEW AWARD CATEGORY FOR FIRST TIME IN 13 YEARS

As part of the partnership, SAE and Flickerfest are together launching a new award category, the ‘SAE Prize for Best Use of Digital Technology’ in a Short Film. Flickerfest, which is accredited by the Academy Awards® is considered in international circles as the leading Australian competitive short film festival, and increasingly filmmakers view it as one of the main festivals on the world circuit.

SAE will be a major digital education partner at Flickerfest and the partnership will allow SAE to extend its reach to an international base of aspiring filmmakers. The young demographic of Flickerfest keeps pace with technology trends and will be receptive to the education SAE provides.

Bronwyn Kidd, director of Flickerfest, said ‘the partnership celebrates the growing use of digital technology amongst a new generation of film makers and through Flickerfest’s partnership with SAE we will be able to acknowledge expertise in the use of this digital technology encouraging short filmmakers to strive for excellence in their craft”

“The fact that we have added the new award, the ‘SAE Prize for Best Use of Digital Technology in a Short Film’ recognises the growing role of digital technology in providing the tools that enable a new generation of film makers to bring their stories to the screen” said Ms Kidd.

Flickerfest’s recognition as Australia’s only Academy® accredited short film festival not only serves to highlight the calibre of the event but the global reach that the short festival has now acquired.

The film festival event runs from 4 to 14 January at Bondi Beach, showcasing the best of short films from around the world before embarking on a 16 venue tour around Australia.
