SAE Institute Melbourne - Audio Engineering, Digital Film Making, and Electronic Music Production

Questions and Answers

What are the differences between the diploma and the degree?

The degree involves an extra year of study after the diploma and is a higher academic qualification. The diploma is geared toward practical exercises in digital film production and involves hands-on individual and group production work. At the end of the diploma, students will have completed a series of short form video productions and developed a broad range of production skills.

So what about the degree?

By continuing to the degree, students gain further advanced practical tuition as well as developing a deeper understanding of the industry, the roles of producers and directors, cultural perspectives as well as business and marketing. Students are encouraged to apply their talents to longer form creative and research projects and degree graduates are generally better placed to take on leading roles in the industry. Finally, during the degree you will also get to meet and discuss aspects of the film making industry with professional practitioners.

Which course should I do?

It depends on your motivations and expectations. Are you looking for the skills to start a career in film-making? Do you think you would benefit from the added perspective, and specialisation of a degree program? Do you see yourself as a practitioner or a leader? Are people, cultural or business skills and knowledge important in what you want to achieve? If you're still not sure, give us a call or send an email and we'll advise on your individual circumstances.
